Peace rarely lasts long for Casey. As work on the townhouses wraps up and bots clear debris from downtown Polson, news of the thriving community spreads quickly. A group of survivors arrives from Missoula, desperate for help; a faction of familiar enemies has seized their home and revived old atrocities. Casey’s moral compass points him toward the fight, urging him to intervene.
Meanwhile, the chaos in Missoula traps Tommy. He’s forced to deal with Mott, a rogue AI with questionable motives. Eager to sever his connection to the SkyFi network, Mott walks a razor’s edge to avoid the AI controlling everything. Now confined to a damaged chassis and processing data at a crawl, Mott fights for survival while trying to force Tommy to see the world from a broken, discarded machine’s perspective.
Daryl finally catches a break, though not the one he wanted. Too much free time and too many unanswered questions plague his mind. The bot workforce ushers in a new era of prosperity for the surface-dwellers, building modular apartments along the Detroit River. But as the skyline changes and a city is rebuilt, Daryl questions his future—until Thoth presents a proposal that will transform his life forever, regardless of his choice.
Death, change, and misfortune weigh heavier than ever. The survivors face challenges that shape their paths and alter their outlooks on life. Pick up the final book in The Light Died series to see how their stories conclude.
With Thoth’s help and Tommy’s assistance in removing the National Guard, Casey receives an offer that may change the community’s future: to become an NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer), working for Thoth and reporting any odd activity. In return, the community would receive weekly aid, security, and other perks. Thoth emphasizes the idea of staging and storing equipment at the community, a midway point between facilities, which makes Casey envision the community thriving.
Tommy and a hivemind AI deploy to a rogue facility cut off from Thoth to attempt to retake it, and discover something that alters his life forever. He may have questioned his existence before, but now? In the meantime, Tommy and Casey brainstorm about the community’s future and consider the possibility of rebuilding Polson, the nearby town.
Back in Detroit, life is as good as it can get… in a way. The rose-colored glasses Daryl wore are lifted as he and Beth explore floors and come across something not even Thoth knew they had access to. Still, he leads his large imaging team, now digitally tagging spots with recyclable metals to stockpile materials for when recycling centers are built. More progress is being made on the surface, with additional buildings under construction, pollution control devices being deployed, and the facility’s surface perimeter continually expanding.
Not everything is sunshine and roses, but will everybody’s decisions and discoveries lead to their own demise?
